About
The EDGE Program at Thurston High School is designed to give students a competitive advantage by combining academic learning, hands-on experience, leadership development, and real-world training through Career and Technical Education. Students gain the skills, certifications, and industry knowledge needed to succeed in high-demand career fields while still in high school.
Key Components:
- Classroom Learning: Students develop foundational knowledge through interactive lessons, textbooks, and industry-aligned coursework.
- Lab Learning: Hands-on training in professional-grade settings allows students to apply their skills using tools, technology, and equipment relevant to their chosen field.
- Student Leadership: Students build essential soft skills through organizations like HOSA, FCCLA, and competitions such as Build Detroit, SkillsUSA, and ProStart—preparing them for teamwork and leadership roles.
- Work-Based Learning: Seniors who complete a CTE program may be eligible for internships, apprenticeships, or job shadowing with local business partners. These experiences provide real-world exposure, professional networking, and résumé-building opportunities. For students without transportation, we strive to secure placements within Thurston or the district.
- Dual Enrollment: Students meeting eligibility requirements can take college courses while in high school, earning credits toward a degree. Dual enrollment requires qualifying SAT scores and, in most cases, personal transportation.
The EDGE Program ensures that students graduate prepared for college, careers, and the future, with the skills and experience to stand out in today’s job market.
